Registration is now open for the 2021 Virtual Great Lakes PFAS Summit!
The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) is excited to announce that registration is now open for the 2021 Virtual Great Lakes PFAS Summit taking place December 6-10! The goals of the Summit are to provide the most current and reliable science and policy, facilitate information sharing, and explore current and future research topics related to per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS).
MDARD Intercounty Drain Program News
For those who haven’t heard the Intercounty Drain Program has a new secretary replacing Peggy Snyder. Joy Myers joined the staff in late June and has been working side by side with Peggy the last several months as we train her for that position. Joy is now fully engaged and we’re pleased to have her on board. Joy has extensive administrative support experience coming from Higher Education and K-12. She worked for the University of Michigan as a secretary for over 17 years at a busy media relations office. She has also worked for several school districts including Los Alamos, NM and Los Olivos, CA assisting students with enrollment and handling student records. She served as coordinator for the California School Boards Association where she was in-charge of the Manual Maintenance division. In this position she coordinated all of the requests for policy updates from over 500 member districts throughout the state of California and trained new employees on policy manuals. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her grandchildren, riding bikes, traveling, reading, sewing and gardening.

2021 Hazard Mitigation Assistance Grant Funding Opportunity
Attached is an informational bulletin announcing fund availability for the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s 2021 Hazard Mitigation Assistance Grant Funding Opportunity – FY2021 Building Resilient Infrastructure and Communities (BRIC) & Flood Mitigation Assistance (FMA). A total of $1.16 Billion is available under these nationally competitive matching grant. Extensive program details can be found in FEMA’s Hazard Mitigation Assistance Unified Guidance document (although this document is labeled “Fiscal Year 2015” guidance, it is the current version of the program guidance).
Michigan’s Water Quality Standards Triennial Review
Public Comment Period and Public Hearing
Every three years states and tribes with delegated authority for their Clean Water Act, WQS Program, hold a formal open comment opportunity to gather comments and suggestions for potential modifications to those rules. This ‘triennial review’ for Michigan’s Part 4 Rules, WQS, and Part 8 Rules, Water Quality-Based Effluent Limit Development for Toxic Substances, promulgated pursuant to Part 31, Water Resources Protection, of the Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Act, 1994 PA 451, as amended, is currently underway and public comments will be accepted between July 30 and September 21, 2021.
In Memoriam – George L. Griffiths
We have recently learned that George L. Griffiths, former Ingham County Frain Commissioner and MACDC Life Member, passed away December 2020.
George served as Ingham County Drain Commissioner for 12 years during the 1980s and early 90s and also served on the MACDC Board of Directors. His obituary is available here.
EGLE Surface Water Monitoring Updates and E. coli Mapper Improvements
EGLE Surface Water Monitoring 2020
Biologists, toxicologists, and engineers with EGLE's Water Resources Division (WRD) pull on their waders every summer to assess Michigan’s water quality. Staff sample surface waters (lakes and streams) to evaluate their condition, measure trends, gauge restoration projects, and identify emerging water quality problems.
